What is the difference between a tax license and a business license?A business license is a way to register your business with your city. A business license is usually applied for through your city hall.

A tax license allows certain business to purchase certain items free of sales tax, and is applied for through your state’s department of revenue. The permit, also known as a tax exemption certificate, allows your business to purchase certain items, sales tax-free, including:

  • Items you’re going to re-sell at wholesale
  • Items you’re going to sell at retail / in your store
  • Ingredients or components for things you’re going to manufacture and sell

The State of Arizona, where the Tucson Gem Show takes place, allows you use an out-of-state wholesale tax license or reseller’s permit to avoid paying sales tax on resale items.
